
Sasha gavlek quartet
A mix of high intensity rhythmic ideas, alongside luscious melodies and soulful improvisation, the quartet presents Gavlek's original compositions with fervour, exploring themes of self-discovery, nostalgia, and sometimes bugs.
Alongside Gavlek, the quartet features well-loved local musicians Lawrence Churches (drums), Angus Leighton (tenor sax), and Aleksander Folvig (guitar). Through their performances, this quartet shares their love for both alternative and classic jazz while providing audiences with an audibly alluring and refreshing musical experience.

Local lover of soup and bug enthusiast, Sasha Gavlek (26, they/them) is a contemporary bassist, bandleader, composer, event producer, and educator based in nipaluna, lutruwita (Hobart, Tasmania).
On a Contemporary Music Performance scholarship, Gavlek graduated from the UTAS Conservatorium of music with a Bachelor of Music in 2019, and has kept themselves busy working within the island's music scene, and making connections across greater Australia. In 2022 they released their debut original alt jazz album, On Second Thoughts, with the Sasha Gavlek Quartet.
Focussing heavily on atmosphere and interpersonal connection, Gavlek’s compositions often utilize improvisation played atop repetitive motifs, exploring themes of personal struggles and growth, their pieces allowing space for the personal touch of anyone who plays them.
